I snapped this shot during a snow storm. You can see the flakes of snow falling in the background. One of my favorite techniques for shooting road signs with the G11 is to put the exposure compensation on the camera to -2/3rds EV so the overall exposure is a bit dark. Then I use the in-camera flash on the G11 set at – 1 EV to light the sign (signs are highly reflective so -1 EV is plenty of flash power to light the sign brightly). This combination of dark ambient exposure and fill lit on the sign gives a nice rich moody images. I used the exact same technique on the second shot below.
