Standing that close to a hole on ice doesn’t appear to be very smart. Is the second shadow someone holding him back?

Yes the two shadows are Royce taking a photo and the guide holding him back with a rope. the guide was awesome about safety.

Yeah, we weren’t being reckless, and the 2nd shadow isn’t somebody looking to shove me in. 🙂 At this particular glacier mill (or moulin, as these holes are called), as Darwin says each of us was roped in with the guide holding on & firmly planted behind. The footing was stable and we were wearing ice cleats. Certainly nobody should be foolhardly on the glacier, safety is an important consideration. But most of the group took a go at the mills, and safety wasn’t an issue IMO.
I should also say that while it wasn’t cropped, the photo exaggerates the perspective… which of course I meant it to do. 🙂

Excellent set – but then I wouldn’t expect anything less! I do like the self-portorait, glad I didn’t take a look, can’t cope with verticals, even allowing for the guiding counter-balance. Love the detail & colour.
