Winter Magic in the Canadian Rockies – 2011

Due to popular demand I have added a third Winter Magic Photo Tour in the Canadian Rockies for Jan. 26 to Jan. 30, 2011. We concentrate on capturing the fantastic ice-scapes on Abraham Lake and explore the lesser known areas of the Bighorn Wildlands and Banff and Jasper National Park, Alberta in the prime of winter. Please note that all the tours I do based out of Aurum Lodge sell out fast (in fact this new tour is the only one that I am doing that has openings for 2011). If you are interested here is the link to the Aurum Lodge with prices and further information. Hope to see you there with your parka and camera!

The Daily Snap – November 28

This snapshot is from Preacher’s Point on Abraham Lake. I like how the ice formation looks like a flower. Speaking of snapshots, I am planning to do a review of the Sigma DP1x camera this week. I have now had a few weeks experience with the camera shooting in all sorts of conditions from indoors, outdoors, low light, bone-chilling cold, snow storms and of course even a few shots in bars and bathrooms 😉

More to come shortly.

If I am not shooting leaves trapped in ice then my second choice is rocks under ice. November is my favorite season for early ice formations especially before any significant snowfall. Or if there has been lots of snow, I go to windblown lake shores where the wind has swept the snow from the ice for crystal clear views to the shoreline under the ice.

This is an image of the Mistaya River in Banff National Park during the November Fire and Ice Photo Tour. For this photo I used my Canon EOS-1ds Mark III and a Sigma120-400mm lens to make an extractive landscape photo of the ice formations on the river. I used my new Singh-Ray Vari-N-Trio (ND+polarizer+color enhancer) to give me a 30 second exposure at 16 during bright overcast. I like how the Vari-N-Trio brought out the colours of the greenish water and the reddish-brown rocks. To see a larger version just click on the photo.

I always get excited when I see a leaf trapped in ice and right away I make a snap shot. I must have dozens of these kinds of photos but I still keep making them. I can’t help myself. Some people collect shoes, some collect dolls; I collect nature’s jewels in ice.
