The Weekly Photo – July 25

This last week has been crazy busy. From Sunday through Friday Samantha and I went on a 5-day back pack trip with David Topping and Lindsay Ayearst. Following that on Sunday we had our big photo garage sale that was fun and we met lots of local photographers. The trip with David and Lindsay was fun and adventurous full of all sorts of different weather and fantastic scenery. We spent two days in the Whitegoat Wilderness area and  three days in the back-country of Banff National Park. Except for one night we had the back-country campsites to ourselves. And we had a wonderful encounter with a grizzly who was far enough away that we felt safe but close enough we could watch it for a long time. For photographers fit enough to backpack, I highly recommend the Whitegoat Wilderness in Alberta if you have the opportunity and the skills. For camera gear I just took my Rebel T2i and the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens. More pictures from the adventure will follow but for now here is a shot of David Topping at Nigel Creek above Panther Falls in Banff National Park. If you want to get to Panther Falls on your own check out my Icefields Parkway eBook

Weekly Photo – Jan 15

This last August I was fortunate to go on a 5-day backpacktrip trip with fellow photographer Eric Fredine. We started in Jasper National Park at Nigel Creek, headed up to Nigel Pass and then into the Upper Brazeau River and up Cataract Pass into the Whitegoat Wilderness. Not only did we have a fantastic time in amazing scenery we mostly had the place to ourselves along with a herd of sheep, a large Billy goat, and tons of marmots and squirrels. One night at Cline Pass was particularly memorable as wave after wave of lightning storms passed directly overhead. I must admit it was a long scary night being pelted by huge winds, the lightning striking the cliffs above us and rocks rolling down the slopes towards our tents. The only one not scared was my dog Brando, he just kept moving closer to the center of the tent to get away from the walls of the tent leaning in on him from the wind–he hates to be disturbed in his sleep!

Below are my 12 favorite photos from the trip. I took about 300 different images during the trip and in the end kept 63 (I usually keep about 10-20% of the images I take so I was happy with my ratio this trip). Because I could not decide which of these 12 images I like best to display as a weekly photo, I thought I would just show all twelve. If you ever get the chance, Cataract Pass is an amazing unknown destination in the Whitegoat Wilderness of Alberta. Also please check out Eric’s photos from the trip – awesome!
